Pardon My Poor Photography Skills

Su, a reader of my blog, made a comment that I have a good blog and that he appreciates what I do as a Mirian. However, he suggested that maybe buying a new camera will make my blog even better. And I replied that the problem is not the camera but the photographer.  Anyway, thank you for your comment, Su! I really appreciate your frankness.

I have always used the auto mode of my old Canon EOS 500D DSLR, my Canon Powershot G15 and my Canon Powershot S100 to take photos as I find all the buttons and dials on the cameras a bit confusing. Maybe it is because of my age, haha! I bought the S100 as a spare camera as it is easier to carry around. And the G15 was one of the two prizes I won in the MyGravyTrain referral contests last year. Anyway, my photography skills suck!

A couple of friends who are very much into photography have been encouraging me to try to stop using the auto mode and to switch to the more creative modes. I am heeding their advice but it may take a while for me to learn the technical aspects of photography. A big thank you to Ken Cho, Josephine Lim and Dannie Koh for your suggestions and inspirations. Coincidentally, all the three of them are based in Brunei. Oops! I almost forgot to thank Billy Ung in Australia for his tips and his lovely photos of birds.

I have started my baby steps into more creative photography. It may take a long while before I show any marked improvement in my photography skills so you all will have to bear with me. I would appreciate it very much if some good photographers can comment on my photos in my blog from this day onward.

I particularly love photographing flowers, insects and birds but I have not been very pleased with most of my shots.  I was at the car park (the big car park near the condominiums) of Taman Selera yesterday afternoon when I saw a bird on the beach. In all my past trips to the park, I had only seen pigeons and the common little birds.

In excitement, I rushed to the beach with my DSLR and slowly approached the bird. When I was at a reasonable distance from the bird, I started shooting. That I was able to capture these shots really made my day though the photos are nothing to shout about. But the mere fact that I was able to capture these reasonably clear shots made me feel happy. I don’t know what bird this is so I would be most happy if someone can enlighten me on that. Thank you in advance!
