The Magic Of Reunion

“Don’t be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.” – Richard Bach

Friendship is something we should treasure in our lives but often due to the increased demands of the ‘real world’, friendship often wanes and we slowly lose contact with old friends.

That is why reunion does wonders in the rekindling of friendship. At the Bintangkian Lau Peng Yu Reunion, I met and reconnected with many old classmates and friends. These are people who dropped out of my life for literally decades, and I had not known if I’d ever see them again.

Reunion with my Kai Chung classmates

Initially there was a proposal to hold the reunion in Sibu. The proposal was shot down after many felt that doing so would diminish the intimacy and meaning of the reunion. Having the reunion in Bintangor is the logical choice as it is the place where we grew up.  It is a place that reminds us of the good times we had when we were younger. And it was the birthplace for most of us. These nostalgic times remind us of the connection we once shared.

The resounding success of The Bintangkian reunion has a lot to do with Facebook for it was the platform through which the reunion was able to generate so much pre-reunion interest and attract so many attendees. Of course that does not in any way diminishes the amazing efforts of the committee members of the reunion.

Friendship

The rekindling of friendship has gotten me to thinking along the lines of the Richard Bach quote at the beginning of this post. What he observes is so true. There are some people who enter your life for a time, and then leave, never to return. It’s not that you don’t value the relationship you build with them while they are a part of your life, but once they are gone, you cannot figure out a way to connect with them again, or they simply disappear. Then there are those people who you forge a deep bond with. Even decades of separation cannot weaken the bond.

Meeting my old classmates at the reunion has helped deepen my friendship and bond with many of them. We may have bid farewell to each other after the reunion but we have reconnected , we will always be intertwined and we will always be friends.
