Timothy Tiah’s Meme Proposal To Audrey Ooi

Timothy Tiah Ewe Tiam proves that his creativity is not restricted to running the hugely popular ad-blogging site Nuffnang of which he is the co-founder.

27-year-old Timothy, aka Fatty, came with his unique idea of proposing to his Malaysian girlfriend, a fellow blogger by the name of Audrey Ooi Feng Ling, while she was having dinner with her friends at Neroteca, a restaurant in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur last week.

Through the glass door of thee restaurant, Timothy used poster-size printed  flash cards featuring popular Internet memes such as PhilosoRaptor, NO Guy, Victory Baby, Socially Awkward Penguin and Impossibru,  to propose to Audrey. Overwhelmed, Audrey aka Shorty agreed.

She said yes

The video of the proposal was uploaded onto YouTube on December 21 and has gone viral, garnering over 1,300,000 views as this very moment from around the world.

Timothy’s proposal has been featured on popular US digital culture site Gizmodo, American news site Huffington Post, and the Technolog section of msnbc.com.

American popstar Katy Perry even made reference to Tiah’s proposal yesterday, teasing her husband and stand-up comedian Russell Brand over Twitter: “Y U NO DO A MEME PROPOSAL TO MEH?”

Timothy was inspired to do the unique proposal as his girlfriend Audrey is a big fan of Internet websites, such as 9gag and Reddit.

“She’s like the Wikipedia of memes,” he quipped. “I was thinking of ways to propose and her best friend suggested I do one where I ended with the Y U no Guy meme. So I got the idea to propose this way.”

Audrey, 26, who works in an advertising firm, said she first met Timothy three years ago through friends.

“I had no idea he was going to propose, as he had told me he didn’t think he was ready for marriage,” she said.

Her initial reaction as the man she calls “Fatty” flipped through the first few meme posters: “Oh god please don’t let this be a break up WTF,” she said in an entertaining blog post days after the proposal.

At the end of the meme-ridden proposal, Timothy knelt and confessed, “I’m very nervous and terrified about this, but I love you and I think you’re my soul mate. And I can’t see myself living without you in my life. … Will you marry me?”
