Welcome to Sawdust Beach Lutong

On the way home after sending my son to work, I decided to use the Piasau Camp way with the intention of stopping at Lutong Beach to take photos. I drive pass this beach quite often but have not actually stopped to take a walk there for the last twenty years or so.

Imagine my shock at the sight that greeted me today. It was truly appalling! The whole stretch of the once beautiful beach is now covered with sawdust. To make matter worse, litters abound. Plastic bottles, discarded rubbish, plastic bags and construction debris dotted the beach. It is an environmental disaster! A better name for the Lutong Beach in its present condition would be Sawdust Beach.  Miri has lost one of its most scenic beaches. It is a real shame!

What are these for?

The culprits are not doubt some of the unscrupulous sawmills operating at Kuala Baram. They discard their sawdust into the Baram River and the sawdust gets washed up onto the Lutong Beach.

Cleaning up the beach would require a herculean effort. The authorities should take serious action against the sawmills and instill in them a sense of social awareness and responsibility. Our rivers are not dumping sites! Rubbish and waste should be dumped at the designated landfills.
