Hidden Killers By Lynda La Plante

Jane Tennison is a young probationary police Constable who has set her sights on becoming a detective. She becomes a decoy in a CID case, posing as a prostitute to lure a suspect accused of many sexual assaults. She is assaulted by the suspect but her colleagues succeed in arresting the suspect.

Jane is then promoted to the rank of Detectice Constable but she becomes conflicted, questioning the ethics of how some of her more senior and experienced colleagues bend the rules to get convictions of suspects, using underhand tactics.

In the meantime, Jane is called to investigate what first appears to be a non-unsuspicious death, with her superiors already convinced that it is a non-suspicious death. Jane feels there is something more to it than meet the eye. Chasing for answers in a multiple-rape case, Jane endangers her new position by seeking the truth instead of toeing the CID line.

At just shy of 500 pages, this novel moves a bit slow with lots of police procedurals but it has its fair share of twists. It is an interesting read and I can’t help admiring Jane’s determination and becoming a fan of her.  The author excels in her ability to portray life in a police station with a ring of authenticity.
