Ready To Die By Lisa Jackson

Sheriff Dan Grayson is in a coma in intensive care with two bullet wounds inflicted by a sniper. The police department of Grizzly Falls, Montana, is in shock.  Then a prominent female judge is reported missing. Her body is found a couple of days later. She too has died from a bullet wound from a sniper while she is skiing. The killer sends a sinister warning to the press: “Who’s Next?”

Detectives Regan Pescoli and Selena Alverez realise that they are dealing with a psychopathic killer but they do not realise they are both on the killer’s hit list. Whittling down the suspect list, they feel that the killer is probably someone who was collared by Sheriff Dan and sentenced to jail by the woman judge.

Headstrong Pescoli is eager for justice as she has always been close to Sheriff Dan. With Dan in a coma, Deputy Sheriff Cort Brewster steps in as Acting Sheriff. Both Pescoli and Alverez do not gel well with Brewster, adding to their stress.

Pescoli is feeling very stressed, with pressure from many fronts: worrying about Dan in a coma, two teenage petulant children, a marriage proposal ultimatum and a new boss who does not like her.

Tracking scant clues, Pescoli and Alverez struggle to find the killer. Something niggles at the back of their minds but they can’t seem to put their fingers on it. But they know that when hunter meets prey, both must be willing to kill–and ready to die.

When the information finally clicks in each of them, the partners are not together and Pescoli heads alone with Alverez close behind, with both willing to do what they must to avenge the Sherriff they both love.

Despite the accolades the book has received, I feel a bit disappointed. I was able to figure out who is the bad guy about three quarters into the book. It is a reasonably good thriller and I like Pescoli and Alverez. I like to be shocked by final twists but it did not happen with this book.
