Morning Walk

Morning walk

Morning walk

Knock knock knock

It’s past 5 o’clock

The knocks are my wakeup call

My son Leslie is ready to go.

Make a quick trip to the loo

Put on my Nike shoes

Armed myself with a rod

It’s time to hit the road.

The sky is eerily dark

It’s quiet except for an occasional dog bark

As we walk past street lamps

Our shadows seem to be playing games.

The morning air is cool and crisp

Though the darkness sometimes gives me the creeps

Self-discipline is what it takes

For my fitness is at stake.

Morning has finally broken

The sun has awakened

Darkness slowly fades away

As the sun slowly starts to hold sway.

Birds start to create a medley of energetic birdsong

Their melodies sound so sweet at the crack of dawn

Perched on the roadside tree

Collared kingfishers seem to greet us with glee.

The school bus comes rolling along

Picking up half-awake kids looking forlorn

The newspaper delivery man zooms by

Over the gates the newspapers fly.

I hear the crows of some distant cocks

Mingled with the croaks of some nearby frogs

The world is alive again

As night comes to an end.

My shirt is drenched in sweat

I hope I will lose some weight

A quick glance at my Huawei phone

Tells me it’s time to head home.

Thirty minutes of brisk walk

Doesn’t sound like a lot of work

I’m just doing some exercise

Paying heed to my doctor’s advice.
