Dead Trees

My favourite dead tree in Piasau Nature Reserve

I see many dead trees all around Miri and I used to wonder why they are not cut down. But now I know why. Standing dead and dying trees are called “snags.”  Such trees occur as a result of disease, lightning, fire, animal damage, too much shade, drought, root competition, as well as old age. Many dead trees remain standing without posing a threat ...

Goodbye 2021 Welcome 2022!

My granddaughter Kayla

Don’t cry because 2021 is over, smile because 2022 is about to happen. It’s the end of 2021 and 2021 will be gone in six hours’ time. Though 2021 has not been a good year for me, I still salute to the experiences I have in the year. I welcome 2022 with great hope, joy and anticipation. Before I say ...

My Wings Have Been Clipped!

Oriental pied hornbill

Under the revised MCO 3.0, outdoor photography is not allowed. As an avid photographer,  I feel like my wings have been clipped. I am going to miss “shooting” my avian models. I am going to miss my outings to Piasau Boat Club, Piasau Nature Reserve, Kuala Baram Wetlands, Miri Central Park and Coco Cabana. It is very frustrating not being allowed ...

Crested Honey Buzzard

A crested honey buzzard in flight seen at Piasau Nature Reserve

Owls Are Amazing Creatures

Barred Eagle-Owl

I have always been fascinated by owls. I recently had my first opportunity of seeing an owl in the wild at Piasau Nature Reserve. It was a barred eagle-owl that reminds me of Yoda of The Star Wars fame. The most striking thing about owls is their eyes. The eyes of an owl are not true eyeballs. Their tubular-shaped eyes, ...

Juliet Is Going To Be A Mum!

A notice informing the public that Juliet is in nest

I have not been to Piasau Nature Reserve for more than two months. I remember seeing Jimmy and Juliet mating when I visited the reserve on October 19 so I have the sudden urge to visit the reserve this evening to see if anything has evolved from that mating. I was in for a little shock. I used to park ...

Have You Ever Seen Hornbills Mating?

Juliet telling Jimmy her feelings?

I was strolling along Main Bazaar in Kuching on October 9 when I saw a pair of pigeons mating. Back in Miri, I made a trip to Taman Selera on October 13 and I came across a pair of grasshoppers mating. I made an hour stopover at Piasau Nature Reserve yesterday hoping to photograph hornbills. Initially I thought I was ...
