Haiku: Election Is Nigh

My college mate Tolstoy Tingang Trang has suggested to me that I should seriously consider writing haiku poems.  In the last couple of days, I decided to do some study about haiku though initially I thought haikus are not the type of poems that I would want to write. Then I became hooked and have been busy trying my hands at writing haikus.

Haiku

Haiku

Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme.

When I first looked at haikus, I thought haikus are easy to write. It was only when I actually tried to write haikus that I found out writing haikus is not as easy as it seems. You need to tell your story in three lines with 17 syllables.

I have written about 10 haikus in the last couple of days and today I would like to share with you this haiku about the forthcoming election in Sarawak.

Haiku: Election Is Nigh

Promises abound

Opposition they subdue

Election is nigh

  1. Fantastic haiku. Once you get the hang of it, it will give you more freedom to write haikus ad captions for your nature photos.

I’ve posted two samples of haiku on FB.
